My Husband & I are in the majority income in Arkansas. We have had to change nearly every aspect of our lives. Gas prices doesn't just effect the gas you put in your car it effects, the food costs, the electrical costs, and touches ever area we use. I am in my fourties and I have never seen Staple groceries go up in cost the way they have lately. Years back it was VERY cost effective to bake from scratch, and stay away from Processed foods. Now for example

Store Brand meat Lazonia (SP) is 9.99

I can not buy the same ingredants and cost cut. The gas prices hit every part of your living. Eggs, Flour, Milk, Butter, staples have soared. I can only imagine what the retired population is doing to handle this. Before it was the costs of prescription drugs now I even wonder if they can afford to drive to pick them up?

Personally we need to get started doing something about it now, waiting every day makes us be dependant one more day

Re: Are high gas prices forcing you to make changes in your everyday life?

I'm 23, make 8.75 an hour, and just over 2 and a half years ago bought a new 4cyl car cause the payments, insurance and gas was cheaper then 2 weeks worth of gas to get to just work in my truck, at 1.80 I was spending $200 a week to get to work, now I'm spending $30 a week, and its to the point where my 1 meal a day (IE lunch) is now 3 - 4 meals a week, as I can't afford to buy even bread and peanut butter to eat, I still live with my parents, and am having to pay back 10K+ in student loans for training I'll never get to use, and if gas keeps going up, the industry I'm currently in will no longer be around, I work at a body shop, if gas hits $6 or $7 a gallon like I keep hearing, there won't be a need for us, as no one will be able to afford a tank of gas, or a few gallons, I drive 40+ miles a day, just to get to work, and another 20+ every monday for my fire department training, I'm on Hensley Fire Department, when the tornados hit us, gas was 3.88 a gallon, desiel 4.70 something, in 1 week we spent over $10k in fuel, 90% in desiel for 1 pumper, and 3 trucks, all of which we had to use to help in the clean up and help people in general, we are coming to the point where we will be pushing fire trucks to calls and running them just enough to spray water on the fires

I'm about to drop my health coverage because I can't afford my deductibles to even go to the family doctor, I've cut back on everything I enjoy, the only thing I do now that I enjoy is fighting fires, and soon thats going to stop, if gas does hit.. no when gas hits $4. a gallon I'll be living in the parking lot of my work as I won't be able to afford to buy gas for a week, let alone a month, and that $30 is only 7 gallons of gas, I'm already ticking everyone that gets behind me off, as I'm doing well under 30mph in 55's and 70's

Are you sure you aren't an illegal alien?? Anybody that makes less than $10.00 per hour can't pay all their bills or raise a family[living below poverty level]............anybody that's paying their hired help less than $10.00 an hour is running a sweatshop, and should be investigated and audited!! If I was you I'd turn in my green card and move to another country where gas is less than a dollar per gallon!! This isn't America anymore, it's the soviet union! JMO ~Denarky

Re: Are high gas prices forcing you to make changes in your everyday life?

My family and I have not really changed anything that we should not have changed in the past already.

We had already car pooled for the year, so that did not add a burden to us.  We already bargin shopped for everything, so again, there was not a changed needed there.  We were meerly making enough money to pay off the debt that we already had, and that I add was a wonderful feeling.  We are not living above our means, which we used to do in the past. We tried to conserve our outings just to be nice to the earth.  We lowered our consumption on electricity by; tinting our windows in our house our selves, sealing ever nook and cranny there was our selves, stopped using the dish washer and planning our loads of cloths a little better, we have well water so that has not changed anything yer (I am actually trying to design a water pump that supplies electricity to itself), we prepare our meals in advance to save on heating the home in the evenings, we had the "Switch" placed on our house to concerve electricity (refer to 1st Electric Coop).  About the only major change that we have made is doing our grocery shoppping right after work on Friday instead of making a special trip to town on the weekends.

I was in the military and stationed over seas for some time.  I was paying the equivalence to $5.00 a gallon when I was over there, this was not rationed at the time.  There was no help for that, we sucked it up and moved on and found a way to live.  There are to many factors that play in the price for the things that we have grown accustomed to here in the states.  America, we have become spoiled to the point that we think that world economics does not effect us.  It is time to realize that what goes on in the world is a part of "OUR" world.  In the past, our families have overcome things like this and did not just blame everyone else for thier hardships, take responsibility to live with what you can afford.  Don't move beyond what you can get alone. And expect no one to help you in your real time for need other than family and friends.  Make a living for yourself.  If you expect things to be done for you, you have already failed.

Times are tough, but you all are tougher.  Step up to the plate and pull yourself out of the rut.  There are going to be major sacrifices that you are going to have to suffer through.  Don't wait for the government to change what they are doing, go out and make change yourself.  This is what makes "America", this is who we are.  This little Forum makes "America" look like a bunch of complainers and a country that is doing nothing. stand up and make your voice heard, saying it here is not going to help the situation.

Re: Are high gas prices forcing you to make changes in your everyday life?

I personally think that it's high time the American people stand up and take back our government.  "Big Business" and their paid-off cronies (I.E. good ol' G.W. Bush) need to be brought to task and accounting for everything.  Whatever happened to the ideals of the Land of Opportunity??? Free Enterprise??? The tried and true ideals of "mom & pop" businesses??  Now it's all about Corporate lies and greed and deception....the big guys in the game getting bigger by running out the competition or buying them up instead of competing with them.  Now with the way the world is, the Big Boy oil barons and their damned speculators on oil futures look for reasons to drive it ever higher....and then when Congress tries to enact windfall taxes and such the ol' G.W. threatens a veto if they even attempt it......I say HELL NO!!!  If the bill passes by a majority and he vetoes it it can be overriden by a majority vote and still become law!!!!

It's like the lesson they teach in the movie V for Vendetta.....it's time for people to not be afraid of their government...but for the government to be afraid of it's people.   Let's all remember the way it should be.... A government for the people, by the people, and of the people.  STAND UP AMERICA AND GOD BLESS US ALL!!!!   'Nuff said

I have personally had a Hydrogen Booster add ed to my vehicle, along with this also use a fuel additive (not over the counter ) it is made up of three compnents. My vehicle has gone from 30mpg to 51 mpg. I've had to make no changes yet.

I can only continue to save as the price goes up.
