Re: Do you think pit bulls should be banned?

Again I ask.  How does banning pit bulls help?  I am all for destroying any aggressive animal (not just pit bulls).  I want someone to tell me how they think banning pit bulls is going to help.  Does it make you feel better to know that the only pit bulls out there are illegal?

Re: Do you think pit bulls should be banned?

As a member of the Humane Society of the United States I have recently found myself in a quandry. First off I dont support breed bans however I have a situation where there is a pit who is still a pup on my street where she is chained to a tree, when not running the street, is visibly malnourished or else she has parasites and I fear the only way to help her is to report the owner because I am 99% sure that she is not registered. It breaks my heart that the only way to save the pup is to have her taken away. She is a very sweet dog and I have tried to talk to the kid who owns the dog but he just uses his smart mouth with me. Honestly I would rather they take the kid away than the dog!! What a sad world we live in when it is the pet that is punished rather than the owner who abuses the animal. I dont understand why it is illegal in Arkansas to kill a snake but ok to kill a dog.

I think everybody just needs to remember this quote:

PUNISH THE DEED, NOT THE BREED.

It's not the dogs, it's the people who train them to do what they do. We've owned alot of Pit Bulls and have never had a problem with any of them. The people who do this horrible stuff to the dogs, training them to be viscious, should be the blame, not the dogs.

And Lorelei, the problem is that the kid will get another pit if he wants one, even if it is to starve it.....the one that you call the "authorities" on will be taken to LRAS where it will be euthanized....they don't adopt out pits or even allow rescues to "pull" them from there.

Re: Do you think pit bulls should be banned?

Have you ever owned a pitbull?.....If the answer is No then you do not have a right to judge the breed. For a fact, Chow Chows are more aggressive then Pitbulls and Cocker Spaniels are known for bitting childrens faces because they get jelous. If everyone would quick listening to the bad media and give Pitbulls a chance I am sure that you would fall in love them. They are extremely loveing , loyal, determined, dedicated, smart, easily trained, NON-aggressive unless trained to be by the Owner. They are not known to be good guard dogs becuase they are so loving as long as you keep them socialized. It is all about how you raise them and what bloodline you buy. Just like anyother breed you always want to see the dam and sire before you buy to see their temperment. Research pitbulls ....go to youtube.com and search pitbulls and watch a few of those videos and see how they really are. I am more then willing to bring anyone to my house at any time I currently have about 20 ranging from 4 weeks to 2 years old I breed them, and I promise by the time you leave my yard you will not only be in love with them but will want to take one home. They are awsome dogs and I would not breed and other breed. Give them a chance with responcible owners and you will get a whole new out look. If your interest to have and openmind reply to this with some contact information and I will make it worth your wild.   PUNISH THE DEED, NOT THE BREED.

Re: Do you think pit bulls should be banned?

No i DO NOT!!! If you read most these e-mails you will see most people do not want this. It all comes down to how you raise them. People are scared of them because they can look scary. But in truth they are the most lovable and loyal dogs. All the kids in my neighborhood come into my yard and wallow all over my dogs and my dogs love the attention so much. They are big BABYS! All dogs will attack, small or big. Yes pitbulls can cause alot more damage than a little dog but they are bigger and stronger. But most dogs will not attacked unless provoked in some way. It's not fair to single out a certain breed of dogs. My children would be devestated if we had to get rid of our dogs. They are after all part of our family.

As a vet tech I can tell you that all of the breeds of dogs we have today are the result of humans interfereing and breeding for specific traits that are desired (or were desired when they were first breed).  Remember that all dogs trace back to a common anscestor (the wolf).  I am the last person to suggest that a dog should be destroyed.  However, I have seen some of the worse pit bulls.  Some of these animals are so aggressive that they would kill their own owner.  These animals need to be destroyed.  However, I have also seen Rotts, Poodles, Dobermans, and even labs that are the same.  Any dog has the potential to be aggressive.  Most dogs are not aggressive.  Don't be scared to the pictures that you see on the news.  You know there was a case in CA were a 7 pound yorkshire terrier killed an infant.  The only reason why you and others are scared of pit bulls is that you don't understand the statistics.  You hear that more pitbull bites occur in the city than any other dog breed.  That does sound bad, but there are more pit bulls in the city as well.  and remember that many dog bites from other breeds are not reported.  If a mini poodle bites you you will only need a band-aid, therefore the bite usually goes unreported.  But any pit bull bite is reported.  More little dogs are bitters than big dogs. If you are going to make a decision on stastics alone you need to look at all the statistics.  Not just the ones that support your fear.

Re: Do you think pit bulls should be banned?

Absolutely!  While you can raise a pit bull to not be an aggressive attack dog, you cannot remove the dog's inborn, incredibly strong bite ability.  I forgot the exact statistic but I believe the bite on a pit bull is the equivalent of 2 tons psi.  I know that the pit bull's bite is the stongest of any breed!  Anyone who has ever had a dog knows that they nip, bite, and chew in fun and love.  It is more of a nuisance than of pain.  I have a yellow lab/retreiver mix that is 11 mos. old who frequently nips for attention.  Can you imagine if he had the bite psi equivalent of a pit bull and that nip was done on a child!?!  I shudder to think of the results of that "nip"!  Pit bulls should remain where they were intended, to guard the junk yard behind an electric fence, not in a private home around people!

Re: Do you think pit bulls should be banned?

I am afraid that you have misunderstood me.  I in no way meant that Pitbulls are not suitable for a family life.  I was just explaining some of the many reasons why pitbull bites are reported more often than any other breed.  I was trying to explain that Pitbulls are not the most common biters.  They are just the most reported.  The reason why is that their bite sends the victim to the hospital and Doctors have a legal responbility to report all dog bites to police and animal control.  Chihuahuas are far more likely to bite than a pitbull.  So why is it that pitbull bites are the most reported.  Because Chihuahua bites don't send you to the hospital.  Pit bulls are not the most dangerous breed.  The most dangerous animal on Earth is the one and only HUMAN.  And by the way your lab could bite a child's arm off too.  I have personally seen a lab retriever rip a cat in half (what if that was a child). I also saw that same lab attack farm animals and kill them.  He also attacked a pit bull.  The pit bull  (the so called vicious one) had to be rescued from the locked jaws of the lab.  After surgery the pit bull was ok.  I am  not saying that pit bulls are all nice and loving.  I have seen many many many vicious pit bulls.  But I have seen many more vicious smaller dogs.  And I have several huge scars from a serious attack from a husky.  Any dog can bite and pits are not more vicious than any other breed. People are just scared of what they don't understand.

Re: Do you think pit bulls should be banned?

If you get shot with a bb-gun....you will likely only have a little red bump! If you get shot with a 44magnum, you will have an angry red hole in you, the size of a baseball and most likely you will die! So people want to ban all guns! Even though it's not the gun that kills; it's the "one using the gun"! So where's the difference?? Replace the bb-gun with a chihuahua, and the 44magnum with a pitbull....and you see why pitbulls will most likely get banned one day. Nobody wants to remove a member of your family, they just want you not to have anymore! Pitbulls that is....keep the ones you already have, and control them. And if one bites a childs face off, don't get mad at me if I put a 44magnum hole through it! ~Denarky

Re: Do you think pit bulls should be banned?

I won't be mad if you kill an animal that is aggressive.  I like prevention (shot the before he bites if he shows aggression).  I have two small children.  At their young age any dog bite could result in death.  I don't want any aggressive dogs running around.  But we already have laws to prevent dogs (aggressive or not) from running around.  If I don't let my child climb the neighbors fence then why would I be concerned that my neighbor has a pitbull.  I am not a pitbull owner.  I wouldn't turn a dog down because it was any breed.  I don't have any dogs.  But as a vet. tech. I feel it is my responsibility to educate people about dogs (their health and safety around them). Don't prov oke a dog and you are likely not to get hurt.  However, there are truly aggressive dogs out there.  If any animal is running free then they are already breaking laws.  That dog should be destroyed if it shows any aggression, if the animal is not aggressive then it whould be impounded and the owner fined for breaking the already existing laws.  Enforcing the laws we already have rather than making new ones is the only real way to protect society.  Also most cities allow two unprovoked bites per dog before that dog is destroyed.  I think that the first time a dog bites unprovked (pit bull or poodle) that animal should be destroyed.  Why are we allowing a known aggressive animal to contiune being a threat to kids.

Re: Do you think pit bulls should be banned?

NO WAY!  I SUGGEST WE BAN THE MAYOR  OF HELENA-WEST HELENA AND  THE LOVELY MR VICK!  THEY ARE THE MEAN ONES, NOT THE POOR ANIMALS WHO ARE RAISED BY PEOPLE WHO HAVE NO COMPASSION OR LOVE WITHIN.  THE ACLU SHOULD GET TO WORK ON THIS ACTION...D DANIEL
