Re: Do you think pit bulls should be banned?

As a mother I can understand the fear that a child involved dog bite can cause. I cry every time I see pictures on the news of a child that will have to undergo months of painful surgeries and rehabilitation due to a dog bite. However, I am also a veterinary technician. I have been bit by several different dogs of many different breeds. However, I have never been bit by a pit bull or a pit bull mix. Pit bulls are no more dangerous than the person who owns them. As a veterinary technician and a dog rescuer, I have seen the aftermath of an individual trying to make a pit bull mean enough to fight. In order to get these normally playful dogs to fight, people beat them, starve them, and do some of the most unimaginable things to them. These dogs are tortured. Its not fair to the breed to kill all of them just because a few have caused problems. Just as we should not place prejudice against a group of people because of the actions of a few, we should not place prejudice against a breed of dog because of the actions of a few. The dogs that are the problem are dogs that are not being trained and not being restrained. Any dog, not just these so called vicious breeds, will be dangerous in these conditions. We already have leash laws and laws about getting your dog vaccinated and licensed. The problem dogs are not family pets that are following the laws. If you place new laws on these dogs only the people who are already following the law will be hurt, Dangerous animals will still be out there, If someone is willing to break leash laws and vaccination laws what makes you think that they will not break breed bans too? Think about it. The laws to protect us are already out there lets just enforce the ones we have and stop all the crazy prejudice.

    Denarky:
Well then...if they aren't banned[like handguns aren't] you should have to apply for a license, and be registered by the government...just in case you accidently lose control of your big baby and it bites a childs face off! And if it does happen....the penalty should be life[for the owner]! TJMHO~Denarky

There are already laws that require that all pets (not just pit bulls) be registered with the city that you live in, they must be vaccinated against rabies and they must be restrained at all times.  I agree that if your dog does attack unprovoked (pit bull or lab or chow, or poodle) they should be euthanized and the owner should be finacially liable for any medical bills, as well as face crimanal charges.  I however do not believe that we should single out pit bulls for extinction.  As I have said before I have been biten by many many dogs.  Should be ban all of the breeds that have ever bitten anyone.  Doing so  would eliminate all dogs and cats and most horses.  Seems a little silly when you put it that way doesn't it?  There are problem dogs out there and they should be destroyed and their owners held responsible, but not all dogs are bad.  The first serious bite I ever had was by a english sheep dog.  Why are you not wanting to ban them?  90% of all cat bites are serious,  I have known someone to almost lose a finger to a cat bite.  Cat bites are infectious,  they can cause just as much medical problems as a dog if not more but the wound itself is not as scary looking.  Remember that if you think Breed Bans are a good idea then you need to go to a veterinary clinic that treats pit bulls and play with a few of them.  It would change your mind.

Re: Do you think pit bulls should be banned?

thank you so much for seeing this in a good light, my little sister is on her way in her second semester to becoming a veternarian and it hurts her so bad to see people singaling out one breed, she has volunteered at several vets and been bitten by dogs too and she has the same theroy of singaling out a dog for its breed, its wrong to ban a dog for an owners actions to cause it to be the way it is. just because there is a few bad apples in a breed of animal look at humans we have alot of people murdering every day and yet i think human murders get less attention than an animal bite. because it is a dog or cat or horse whatever it may be it brings more attention than the people we have on death row or any where in our prison system than an animal attack brings. an animal is taught to be what it is just like a child is brought up to be who it is, good, bad, or indifferent. and yes a cat bite is so much worse i have been bitten by dogs and cats the cat bite will leave a much worse scar than a dog any day of the week. but yet both mouths are much cleaner than a human mouth, more equal good and bad bacteria. animals that are viciuos need to be destroyed but for the ones that are trained right and respect other animals and humans why must they pay the price for human stupidity

Re: Do you think pit bulls should be banned?

Sad   People fear pit bull's because of what they hear instead of learning about them.  Pit Bull's are just as loveable as any dog we have in ouyr country.   It's people who makes them mean fighting and training them that way these are the people who need to be banned from our country how many pitbull's would die for there owner's?   Check them out with a vet.   Before you know it it will be like China We don't have freedom as it is, so get rid of pit bulls I think that is wrong did they hurt you?

Re: Do you think pit bulls should be banned?

NOOOOOOOOOOO Pit bulls should not be banned. I have one that is mixed and he is one of the best dogs I have ever had. It depends on the owner and how it is raised.

Re: Do you think pit bulls should be banned?

Pit bulls should be bannned from Lonoke.  I am from Lonoke and there are good dogs of all breeds but the dogs are more dangerous than not. I am a dog owner and more bad things have come from pit bulls than good. I know this opinion sounds one sided but, for the general safety of the community  a ban should be imposed.

Exactly how is it that breed bans protect the community?  How do breed bans offer safety?  Does it make you feel any safer to know that there are no legal pit bulls out there?

Re: Do you think pit bulls should be banned?

well i have a pit. and she is afraid of her own shadow... if the dogs are to be banned then the owners should have to be put on a list too.as of rule the breed isn't at fault the owners are.if you take a pup and treat it like any other dog it will watch over you kids your house just as any shepard or lab. but the owners have to make them mean to make a statement.. so if you ban the breed then you need to make a list to put the owners on watch also.

Re: Do you think pit bulls should be banned?

No I do not think Pit Bulls should be banned. My daughter has a female she raised from 4 weeks old. She is now 6 months and she is the most loving dog. She mothers my daughter's 4 month old Pug and the only thing she will do to you, is smother you with kisses. If we ban pit bulls what breed is next? Will it be Rottweilers, Doberman Pinchers or Chihuahuas? Any dog can be made to be mean by its owner. I agree with some of the postings, make stiffer penalties for the people who make these dogs mean. It isn't the dogs fault.

Re: Do you think pit bulls should be banned?

No....Pit Bulls should not be banned or picked on specifically....I currently have a Pit Bull Momma that had some beautiful babies on Mothers Day...she has not shown any aggression while in our foster care....we foster all kinds of breeds for local rescue groups....you would think that if the Pit was an agressive breed "by itself" then this animal would have been aggressive, not knowing who we are and what we are doing with her puppies....we were there in the whelping box with her helping her.....no growling, no nipping, only LOVE......

If humans are to take the banning things that "hurt" us, then most everything in existance would be banned....

Oh, and who are the "experts" that are going to be specifying if an animal is a Pit bull, part Pit Bull, etc?  Are they qualified to identify breeds or are they just someone in a job with a "god-like" mentality that is doing this....

Do the right thing....help God's creatures out of situations that they have not chosen to be in, don't BAN them.....rescue the animals in need, educate the owners that don't know any better and get your animals spayed/neutered...

Re: Do you think pit bulls should be banned?

NO I DONT!! THIS STATE IS GOING STUPID WITH THIS PIT BULL BANNING.... THEY SAY THERE ARE MORE PIT BULL ATTACKS.  THIS IS SO WRONG. PIT BULL ARENT BAD, THE OWNERS ARE! IT ALL DEPENDS ON HOW THEY ARE RAISED. SO IF THEY WANT TO DO SOMETHING TO SOMEBODY FOR IT THEN THEY NEED TO DO SOMETHING TO THE OWNERS NOT THE DOGS.  BIT BULLS ARENT EVEN THE WORST DOGS. WHAT ABOUT CHOWS OR ROTWEILERS? THEY ARE WORSE THAN THE PIT BULLS....IM GOING TO MOVE OUT OF THIS STATE AND GO TO ONE THAT IS WAY BETTER. THERE IS NO LOTTERY OR GAMBLING AND NOW YOU CANT EVEN HAVE PIT BULLS. THIS MAKES ME MAD. I GUESS THEY ARE TRYING TO MAKE THESE ARKANSAS HILLBILLIES SEEM LIKE THEY ARE HOLY ROLLERS,

THIS STATE IS THE WORST STATE THAT I HAVE EVER BEEN IN, AND I GUARENTEE THAT I WILL NEVER COME BACK TO THIS STATE AGAIN!!!!!!!!

Re: Do you think pit bulls should be banned?

I don't agree with the ban. I think pit bulls are only as dangerous as their owners train them to be. I think the fault should fall with the owners and not the animals. I personally have two and I have had them for years with no aggression shown. I also have 2 children and they are very friendly with the kids and watch over them. The only time I have had any problem is when someone has taunted them and I believe that any dog is going to react when taunted not just pit bulls. I think it is a violation of our civil rights. I also believe that since the government has gotten away with this it is the gateway for the government to control a lot more to come.

Re: Do you think pit bulls should be banned?

No... there are way too many other breeds with the same inclination towards aggression and most of those are aggressive towards humans.  Pit bulls ( those that are taught to be aggressive) are usually aggressive towards other dogs, not humans.  What about Chows, cocker spaniels, chihuahuas, poodles, etc.  Many dog breeds are naturally aggressive if they are not properly trained.  Dogs should always be obedience trained and not guard/attack trained.  Instead of the ban, education and training should be mandatory for owners and dogs.  This would greatly improve the situation for all.

Re: Do you think pit bulls should be banned?

I may be somewhat un-forgiving in my dealing with animals [not humans] but if one pit bull bites on child on the face in my immediate vicinity[say 50 mile radius] I will personally, and permanently ban[teminate] all pit bulls I see, forever, unmercifully!! ~Denarky (no offense meant)
