I have had nothing but Pit Bulls for the last 5 years or so. I have had quite a few too. None of them have been vicious nor have they hurt anyone. I used to walk them without a leash and they never got out of line. I also have a young daughter who is 5 years old now. She has rode them, pulled and yanked at their tails and ears, kicked ( just playing of course), and prolly 1,000 other things that I didn't see and she has never been hurt by any of them. They behave how they are taught to behave. It's the idiots that raise them to fight and be vicious that give them a bad name. No I don't think they should be banned. They make great pets and awesome watch dogs.

I agree with you also, 2mom99!! I really think that hasnt helped the pits reputation, I mean ppl going on hear say and lots of it is alot of bull!! I bet most of the ppl that want to ban them, hasnt even owned one.. They are the most loving and caring breed of all dogs.. BUT these loving and caring animals have been raised by loving and caring owners!!!

The Locking Jaw

The most common myth about 'pit bull' dogs is that their jobs lock. This is untrue.

Breeds like the American Pit Bull Terrier do have very powerful jaws, and this is where this myth comes from. However, the jaw does not 'lock' - and you cannot get the jaw to 'lock' through abusive actions such as breaking the jaw. (yes, we have heard from people who believe this is how you get a 'locking jaw' and we have incredibly sympathy for any animals they own.)

On this topic Dr. 1. Lehr Brisbin of the University of Georgia wrote:
"The few studies which have been conducted of the structure of the skulls, mandibles and teeth of pit bulls show that, in proportion to their size, their jaw structure and thus its inferred functional morphology, is no different than that of any breed of dog. There is absolutely no evidence for the existence of any kind of "locking mechanism" unique to the structure of the jaw and/or teeth of the American Pit Bull Terrier."

The 'pit bull' has powerful jaws, but they are not alone in this. This is yet another myth - that 'pit bulls' are more dangerous because they have the most powerful bite. Most large breeds and cross breeds have a very strong bite, and even smaller dogs can inflict a bite powerful enough to kill. Any dogs can be dangerous in the hands or an irresponsible, negligent or abusive owner.

I agree with dusty, why punish the animal, its not its fault!! Do something with the owners!!
You can tell if a person loves animals or not... (usually) I think the the person or persons that want to own a pit bull, need to have a back ground check done on them, also they are to have to go thru several testings to see if they are worthy of owning a pit. I will always believe that " ITS ALL IN HOW THEY ARE RAISED!!!" what next they gona ban poms, labs, all terriers, ???? you know rottys and dobys had a bad rap for a long time... what happen there???
Besides.. you know I read... more people die from smoking cigs and others inhaling second had smoke in a years time, than a dog (any type of dog) bite or attack!!! Come on !!! Do something with the STUPID people and train all dogs in the right manner!! and I think things would change!!
LEAVE THE PIT BULLS ALONE!!! NOTHING WRONG WITH THE BREED. JUST THE STUPID PEOPLE!!!

I agree with you that they should not be banned. My son as had a half pit bull for 9 years now and he is a wouderful dog and very smart. It is the owners of mean dogs of any breed that should be held responsible. It was not a pit bull that bit my husband a couple of years ago but a large dog that is very much owned by people. I want name the breed because any untrained dog can bit. I wish the law was changed so that we could vote on all laws passed in our towns and cities. I'm sure that this will never happen in my life time but I do believe that some day people will stand up for their rights. One person one vote.

NO!!!!!!!!PIT BULLS SHOULD NOT BE BANNED. PIT BULLS USED TO BE AMERICAS FAMILY PET OF CHOICE UNTIL EVERYONE STARTED TALKING ABOUT HOW VICIOUS THEY ARE BECAUSE PEOPLE FIGHT THEM. THATS NOT EVEN WHAT HAS MAD THEM VICIOUS, IF THEY ARE VICIOUS ITS BECAUSE THEY HAVE BEEN RAISED THAT WAY. I MYSELF HAD ALWAYS BEEN LEARY OF THE BREED BASED OFF OF WHAT I HAD "ALWAYS HEARD" BUT I WAS WRONG. IF YOU RESEARCH THE BREED THEY ARE THE MOST LOYAL AND LOVING BREED THERE IS. THEIR NUMBER ONE GOAL IS TO PLEASE THEIR OWNER. IF YOU DON'T KNOW ABOUT THE BREED AND JUST FEEL THE WAY YOU DO BASED OFF OF "WHAT YOU'VE ALWAYS HEARD" WATCH THE MICHEAL VICK DOCUMENTARY AND YOU WILL SEE PIT BULLS FOR WHAT THEY TRULY ARE. Petey's Legend

His dog represents a bygone era � the days of silent movies and vaudeville. But the memory of the American bull terrier still lives on in the hearts of many Americans, as well as former owner Ted Lucenay of Robinson.

Pete, the canine comedian from the Our Gang movies, still receives attention although he's been gone for more than 60 years. A quick search of the Internet confirms the continued interest of the Our Gang stars, with special mention of Pete, and numerous Web sites have been devoted to the group.

Movie rental stores, such as Blockbuster and Hollywood Video still receive enough interest to carry the classic comedies and the newer versions. Younger residents might remember the Little Rascals , the name that replaced Our Gang . The newer movies had a different dog playing Pete.

Lucenay is regularly bombarded with requests for pictures and information about his beloved animal. Museums have contacted him, and the Waco-McLennan County Library also wanted information for a display.

Helen Lucenay, Ted's wife, said the interest in Pete comes and goes.

"When the movies were brought back on television, people would call for a story or want Ted to send them a picture," she said. "I don't think Ted minds. This is something that's a part of him."

Although Lucenay is used to the attention, Pete was more than a celebrity to him. He was a best friend.

"He was a gentle, playful and warm dog," Lucenay said. "He would sleep at the foot of my bed. He was just the regular family dog. I really miss him."

Lucenay was a young boy growing up in California when Pete was alive. When the pair would go for walks, people would stop Lucenay and Pete, so they could have their picture taken with the dog.

"He was always recognized," Lucenay said. "Everybody loved him."

To further publicize the lovable pup, Lucenay's father, Harry Lucenay, would take Pete to the Steel Pier in Atlantic City for fans to meet him and pose for pictures with him.

Pete first got his break in show business in the 1920s when he took over Pal's � his dad � place in the Buster Brown silent movies. The Buster Brown director, Hal Roach, went on to direct Pete in the Our Gang comedies. Infamous for the ring around his left eye and his funny antics, Pete quickly stole the show.

And now, as his legend carries on, people are wondering what happened to the remains of the Tinseltown dog. Pete died in 1946, when Lucenay was 18. Lucenay joined the Army and after his discharge, settled in the Waco area in the 1950s when he married Helen.

According to e-mails from roadsideamerica.com, Pete has sparked numerous rumors concerning his whereabouts. One reference mentions Pete was poisoned, leading to his demise. Another reference mentions cemeteries where Pete could be buried.

But, Lucenay said, none of the rumors are true. Pete died of old age, not poison. And the final resting place of the famous pup � that secret remains with Lucenay.

But the one thing for certain, the black ring around Pete's left eye was not the work of a makeup artist. The natural skin coloration was such an oddity that it became certified by Ripley's Believe It or Not.

When asked about the rumors and information circulating about Pete, Lucenay responded, "There's always going to be something out there. And in today's world, anything's possible."

Pit Bulls should not be banned. It is stupid to ban one breed. I am old enough to remember that the Little Rascals dog was a pit bull.

I believe you are mistaken MR. HEITMAN......I am not an idiot, nor do I believe guns should be banned.....my special field in the service of this country was weaponry....and am trained in all aspects and served my last tour in Viet Nam as a Sniper! I believe the correct definition of a idiot is one who believes himself immune from a freak outburst by a pit bull. If you are abreast of the news....you may have knowledge of such an event by a chimpanzee on a woman who is now fighting for her life. Neither she nor the chimps owner were worried about a possible problem.....but you just never know, do you? ~Denarky

Thank you for the post, I know how hard it is write about such a sad event in your family! One life lost is worth more than all the pit bulls.........especially that of an infant! It makes me very sad and disillusioned when I read about all these people trying to cover up for the viciousness of these freak-bred animals! ...."suffer the little children to come unto me, and do not hinder them, says the Lord.........." I would hate it terribly to have had anything to do with such a senseless loss of human life ~Denarky

Oh how I wish Pit Bulls would be banned from my community. It is true that breed is not at fault, people are the problem. Unfortunately people will excersise their "right" to own any kind of dog they want, and train that dog as they see fit, regardless of the rights of their family, friends and neighbors and often without personal concern for the safety of those they choose to put into harms way. It would be unfair to judge ALL owners of this breed by the behvior of a few but most of the Pit Bull owners I have seen in my hometown are not upstanding pillars of the community. I will admit that my experience is limited to my own small town, however, it does not change the fact that the house down the street with two or more Pit Bulls in the yard (loose behind a fence) was raided this summer for being a meth lab. The fact is when Pit Bulls attack they kill people. A family member of ours watched helplessly from behind a fence as her neighbors "sweet" Pit Bull pulled their three week old baby from it's bassinett and mauled it to death while the childs mother (the owner) who was hanging wash in the same back yard, fought to save him, she failed and the dog was destroyed. The child's mother committed suicide within the year, and our Aunt was in counseling for years after. We as a society will not regulate who gets to own any breed of dog. There is no test to take to see if you are the type of person who will be responsible owners of a potentially deadly animal. It has fallen to the people affected negatively by irresponsible owners to make changes in the best interest of the majority. Pit Bulls are dangerous and in my opinion not worth the risk.
