It truly isn't the cost of putting seatbelts in the buses...or making the kids sit down...it is FOR THEIR OWN SAFETY!! unless, as someone suggested, parents riding the bus (if they have extra seats available) to help get everyone unbuckled in an emergency these kids are safer not being buckled in. Even the most level headed kids in the world that are involved in a burning bus or a crash..can panic and forget how to save themselves, including how to unbuckle a seatbelt. One driver for 72 kids...you people do the math...

I have no children so to some folks I may be speaking out of turn but it doesn't mean I don't care, I am not employed either so I try to help the schools with volunteering when and where needed because I do care.)

Very well said.You know, if we get started on the huge amount of parents complaining and the little they will actually do to fix a problem, No doubt that is one huge post in itself! LOL

I know people that work at a plant that builds school buses and well to be honest...many school systems prefer to install sterio systems and school logos with left over funding than put seatbelts in. I guess that is why I brought it up in the first place.

I by no means argue that being buckled up is a bad thing. But when I drive my personal car and get a ticket for a seatbelt a guy on a motercyle will be passing me by without not only a seatbelt but a choice of riding without a helmet. Now before the police officer can finish the no seat belt ticket no doubt a school bus full of our children (Our Future) will pass my car also. They too have no seatbelts. How can anyone put a price on our future. The folks say it is too costly. Why not take all the ticket funds that the police recieve for the (click it or ticket) funds and put seatbelts on the public keyword city school buses. Public school buses....Or might I just say, Why are the folks that run our public school system get fined per student that doesn't have a seatbelt on.

I do wear a seatbelt everyday, I am just a bit po'ed that the school system cares little about our futures adults of the world. Lets face it one day we mom's and dad's will get old and this world will depend on those children that ride that bus daily to school. What is your thoughts on the subject? Do you think I am all wet? Or do you think I make a valid point? Really wanting an honest opinion

I agree with you and it's certainly not because I am "jealous" as the other person posted about M/C drivers being allowed to ride with or without a helment. If there were any kind of JEALOUSY, the only jealousy I can come up with is the fact that the M/C driver has a choice whereas that right has been taken from regular vehicle drivers.

But the question is not whether or not M/C drivers, convertible vehicles, or any other type of topless vehicle, whatever it may be. The question is, "do you think the seatbealt laws should be on our childrens school buses also".

I have always thought that it would be a good idea to have seat belts on the school buses, not only for the safety of the children but that it may even help keep the kids settled down while riding the bus. After reading some of the posts from folks that have or do drive a school bus, I can now see valid reasons for not wanting the seatbelts. But the answer lies flat in the lap of the parents...if they would teach their children how to behave then the seatbelts would work if installed. I have seen a DCFS worker and a Police officer people who as swarn to protec and serve take children away with out using a seat belt. so just remove the law or enforce it every where including but not limited to School Busses, police cars, DCFS workers and any other transport system.

I was a school bus driver for LRSD. It would be just wonderful to have our children in seat belts. But, think about 25-30 children on your bus as young at 5, and an emergency happens, accident, fire etc, do you honestly think we can get all them little ones unbuckled fast enough to get them off the bus? There are alot of valid points being made about this subject. But I myself was always worried if I could get my kids off my bus fast enough if something happened.

I do not think kids should wear seat belts on a bus. I drove bus for 12 years, both the "short bus" and the big buses. The special needs bus had several seat belts and wheel chairs. I had no aide to help on the bus due to funding. The children's risk to have a seat belt verses going with out one was greater. I make this point because wearing a seat belt on a bus is dangerous. The seats are high backed and straight. If a bus were in a collision, the child would suffer broken necks and head damage because they would be slammed into the seats they are sitting in or the windows. Without belts, they move with the impact but a shorter distance, while they would have injuries, they would not necessarily result in brain damage or death, which has been proven in crash testing. Bus seats are designed to cause the least amount of injury and hold up to the childrens "use" and abuse. The reason these bus seats cost so much when a parent has to replace one is because of their crash test passing ability.-dory

I am a proud military police wife and do make sure my kids are buckled up at all times! I think it don't matter if you were your seatbelt or not! if you are gonna die its gonna happen one way or another there is no controlling it! my aunt was out one night with some friends and she was wearing her seatbelt but her friends were not and she lost controll of the car and went off the side of a mountain her friends jumped out because they were not in their seatbelts but she couldnt get hers undone so she didnt make it out alive while the others came out with scratches!

A friend of mine was in a real bad car accident and wasnt wearing his seatbelt and a pole came through his back glass and went right through his head rest but since he wasnt wearing his seatbelt he got slung out of the way from it and survived they told him if he would have been wearing it the pole would have gone through his head!

so you see its not us who decide our fate by trying to protect ourselves no matter what we do if we are meant to die we will!

I am a firefighter and work for an ambulance service and I see what people look like after a car wreck and when they do not wear seat belts they are hurt worse than if they had put it on, as far a school buses, yes seat belts should be worn by everybody on the bus.

Seat belts do save lives and with several school buses having to travel on interstates and highways to transport children to and from school I see the need to make them as safe as possible.

We all need to educate our children on the use of seat belts in ALL vehicles that they ride in.

I understand what you are saying about mis-behaving kids on buses...My best friend is over the sheridan school district bus routes and is in charge of hiring drivers etc. Kids behaving is a totally massive post! LOL But I just think that if they were in place and tried to make (KEYWORD) try to make them wear them maybe it would be safer for everyone including you. One or two might even sit there tush down for a change. LOL

As a former school bus driver with 60 hours of training before I was allowed to touch the keys of a bus...and numerous movies about everything that can and will happen to kids on school buses..I think I can honestly say that 72 kids on one bus will NOT stay buckled up. Also, there is one driver that has to unbuckle at least 1/2 of those same kids in an emergency which doesn't give anyone time to get off in time in case of a fire etc. That is the reason they don't have seat belts installed in them to begin with...
So until you actually drive 72 kids around that are bouncing in the aisles, fighting and yelling...don't be so concerned about seatbelts and be a little more concerned with teaching your kids how to behave.

This is the very reason why my children have NEVER rode the bus to school. (another reason is - have you seen how those bus drivers actually drive???) On a business trip in Minneapolis a few years ago, I was watching the local news in my hotel room. Two school buses collided. In one school bus, the children had seat belts on, and the children sustained little injuries. The school bus that did not have seat belts, there were children thrown all around the inside of the bus, thrown out the windows, and some children actually died. I also find it very amusing that every day I see people riding in the back of pickup beds, but do you see them getting pulled over for a seatbelt violation? My children are teenagers now, but even today, as soon as we get in the car, it is automatic - you buckle up. For the life of me I cannot understand why the schools do not INSIST that there are seatbelts on school buses. I guess if you want to take the risk and let your child ride the school bus that does not have seat belts, that if your gamble with your child's life, and if your child is killed in a school bus accident, it is your own business. All I know is that MY children are safe in MY car BUCKELED UP. I guess that is why our school system is falling behind the rest of the world - NO COMMON SENSE.

I believe seatbelts should be on school buses and that seatbelt laws should not be anywhere. I believe that people should not have to be told to wear a seatbelt. I believe in self-government about things like that. If I rode a motorcycle, I would wear a helmet. I would not concern myself with whether or not it was a law. What a foolish thing. It annoys me that a person scrambles to put their seatbelt on as a reaction to seeing a police car. I wear my seatbelt because I love my children and my grandchildren and that is a simple precaution to take.

Not trying to start a fight with you....read my posts again and try to imagine a 59 year old gray haired vietnam veteran just trying to help you understand that by slapping some guilt trip on M/C riders over whether it's right or not for you or anybody else to wear a seatbelt, is like slapping a guilt trip on your mother because your brother got two pieces of bacon and you only got one. If you hate seatbelts that much, then just don't wear one. According to the law...you'll be in the wrong and the M/C riders have done no wrong. Just keeping everything real....oh...you can talk any way you like..or spell any way you like....I and many other vets risked our lives[some died] for you to have that freedom!.............~Denarky
